Cavs drop AAC decision to Covenant

WISE –UVa-Wise’s current losing streak reached eight games Friday night as the Cavaliers dropped a 77-59 decision to Covenant (Ga.) College in Appalachian Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at Greear Gymnasium. Senior Blake Mellinger (Glade Spring, Va./Patrick Henry High) and junior Parker Gemmell (Bristol, Va./John Battle High) each scored 17 points in the loss that dropped UVa-Wise to 3-24 overall and 3-16 in the league. Justin Sorensen (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River High) led the Cavaliers’ rebounders with seven. Josh Suddath scored 25, and Nate Beers poured in 24 for Covenant. The Scots improved to 11-13 and 10-9 in the AAC. UVa-Wise plays its final home game of the season at 6 p.m., Saturday, against AAC opponent Bryan (Tenn.) College.
