Bluefield rebounds to top Cavaliers

BLUEFIELD, Va . – UVa-Wise senior Blake Mellinger (Glade Spring, Va./Patrick Henry) scored a team-high 18 points and junior Parker Gemmell (Bristol, Va./John Battle) added 15, but the Cavaliers could not snap out of its current losing streak, dropping a 66-49 decision to Bluefield College, the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s first-place club. The Cavaliers, now 3-20 overall and 3-12 in conference play, held a slim 30-28 edge over the Rams at halftime, but Bluefield stormed out in the second half and outscored the Cavs by 19 in the frame. UVa-Wise played tough defensively, holding Bluefield to just 34 percent shooting for the game. However, the Rams out-rebounded UVa-Wise 50-19, with 26 of those Bluefield boards coming on the offensive end. Cedric Brown and Jamaine Burcke each had 13 rebounds for the Rams, and Corey Wade led the team in scoring with 20 points. Meanwhile the Cavaliers wrap up their three-game road swing Saturday at Alice Lloyd College, looking to avenge a loss to Eagles earlier in the season in Wise.
