Montreat gets defensive against Highland Cavs
January 18, 2005
WISE, Va. – UVa-Wise hit only 39 percent of its shots Tuesday night against a defensively stubborn Montreat (N.C.) College squad, who delivered an 88-56 TKO over the Highland Cavaliers in Greear Gymnasium to maintain a share of first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference race.
Redshirt freshman Jarred Soles hit three three-point shots on his way to a 13-point, five-rebound performance. Seniors Parker Gemmell and Blake Mellinger each struck for 11 points for the Cavaliers, who sunk to 3-9 in the conference and 3-17 overall.
Montreat’s Tim Lewis tallied 17 points and hauled in 12 rebounds to lead his team, which remains in a first-place tie with Bluefield College. Montreat, Bluefield and Brevard (N.C.) College all were tied for the conference’s top spot entering Tuesday night’s action. Brevard, however, dropped to second after suffering a 79-77 overtime loss to Bluefield Tuesday.
The Cavaliers, meanwhile, have the unenviable task of hosting Brevard Saturday, as theTornados come to Wise fresh off the disappointing loss to the Rams. Tipoff for the game is 7:30 p.m. in Greear Gymnasium.
