Strong Shawnee State Start Propels Past UVA-Wise

Urbana, OH – Shawnee State rode a strong start where it scored the women’s basketball game’s opening 10 points and 19 of the first 21 tallies to propel past UVA-Wise on Friday night. The Bears enjoyed a 20-point halftime lead before going on for an 87-46 victory over the Lady Cavs at the Urbana University Pepsi Classic.
Guard Chelsea Lee led UVA-Wise (1-12) with 12 points while Sarah Helton chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Cavs had a tough night shooting as they hit just 32.7% (16 of 49) and 11 of 18 free throws.
Urbana (11-4) had four players in double digits with both Kelly Wagner and Karen Diehl dropped in 12 points. The Bears completed the season sweep of the Lady Cavs after claiming a 67-62 victory in their own tournament on November 17 th.
After falling behind 10-0 and 19-2 in the first seven minutes, the Lady Cavs cut the margin back down to 10 points, 25-15, with 6:59 in the first half but could get no closer the rest of the game. Shawnee State poured it on in the second half including the game’s final basket, a three-pointer with 51 seconds left, to take the 85-48 win.
UVA-Wise will wrap up the weekend with bout against host Urbana University on Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m.
