Urbana Outscores UVA-Wise in Final Minute for Win

Urbana, OH – Tied 58-58 with 1:28 left, Urbana outscored UVA-Wise 9-2 the final minute for the 67-60 women’s basketball win.

The Lady Cavs (1-13) led 27-20 at the half only to see the Lady Knights (8-6) take the second stanza by a 47-33 tally.

Sarah Helton paced UVA-Wise with a 23-point effort on eight of 14 shooting. Chelsea Lee added 16 points on six of 11 attempts, seven rebounds and four assists. Rachel Helton chipped in 12 points to round out the double figure scorers.

Brittany Runner’s 17 points and 11 rebounds were tops for the winning home team. Taria Blanchard add 16 points while Sam Riley handed out nine assists to go with 12 points.

The Lady Cavs trailed by as many as six points in the first half. The squad rattled off 12-straight points to go ahead 27-18 with 1:52 in the opening half on a Lee jumper. Urbana’s Haley Fannon made two free throws for the 27-20 halftime score.

UVA-Wise rebuilt its lead back to nine points, 37-28, in the first 3:22 of the latter half. Urbana went on the biggest run of the game, 16-1, for its largest lead to that point, 44-38 at 10:49. The contest would be tied two more times before a third tie of 58-58 would set up the final minute.

The Lady Cavs will be off until hosting Tennessee Wesleyan next Thursday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
