Lady Cavs Snap Streak in Overtime

Montreat, NC – It took overtime but the 13-game losing steak is history. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise found the win column for the first time in two months as it prevailed 91-89 at Montreat College in overtime.

In a game where the final statistics are almost identical, the one difference is the Lady Cavs making 34 of their 66 field goals while the Montreat Cavaliers hit 33 of 66 shots for the deciding two points. UVA-Wise takes its season mark to 2-14, snapping the 13-game losing streak, and 1-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Montreat drops to 1-16 and 1-6.

Chelsea Lee had a double-double on the day with 25 points and 10 rebounds from her guard spot. Sarah Helton was right behind with 22 points on nine of 17 shooting, seven boards, five steals and four assists. Rachel Helton dropped in six of 12 shots for 15 points. Lauren Jervis was a perfect five of five for 11 points and seven caroms. Terri Ann Hill had a career-best eight assists to go with eight tallies. Sheila Royall had 10 points off the bench.

All five Montreat starters were in double figures. Tamira Wills led the home team with 20 points. Kia Stewart-Butler added 17 points while the trio of Whitney Boone, Shennelle Feather and Monique DeLoatch all added 15 points. Feather grabbed 10 boards and DeLoatch handed out nine assists.

UVA-Wise led by four points, 37-33, at the half before Montreat won the scoring battle, 44-40, in the second stanza for a 77-77 tie after regulation. The Lady Cavs were able to make the one more basket in the extra period for the 91-89 victory.

The Lady Cavs return to Greear Gym for a 5:30 p.m. affair against Bluefield College Tuesday, January 9 th.
