Helton and Lee Take Lady Cavs to Victory

Wise, VA – Sarah Helton and Chelsea Lee combined to take the UVA-Wise women’s basketball team past Bluefield College Wednesday afternoon. The senior duo combined for 46 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Lady Cavs over the Lady Rams, 70-54.

The UVA-Wise victory gives the team its first two-game win streak of the season. The Lady Cavs are now 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Bluefield drops to 5-9 and 1-6 in the league.

Sarah Helton had a season-best effort with 28 points on 12 of 20 attempts and 12 rebounds, her second double-double. Helton added three assists. Lee kept her solid play in the last few weeks going with 18 points on seven of 13 shooting, five assists and three boards. Rachel Helton chipped in nine tallies while Lauren Jervis grabbed 10 caroms. UVA-Wise outboarded one of its first opponents of the year, 42-35.

Bluefield received 30 of its 54 points from two post players, Misty Neel and Leslie Cook. Neel had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds while Cook added 12 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Cavs started strong and worked their lead to 14-2 over the opening nine minutes. Bluefield cut the margin to seven points three times with the last, 22-15, with 5:57 left in the opening half. Lee pushed the difference back to double figures with the next six points before UVA-Wise led 35-23 at the half.

Cook made the opening bucket of the second half for the Lady Rams for a 35-25 score but would get no closer. Sarah Helton made a three-point play and UVA-Wise was no challenged again as they enjoyed a lead of as many as 20 points. The Lady Cavs went on for the 70-54 win for the second-win in a row.

UVA-Wise will continue its busy four days with a 5:30 p.m. tilt at Pikeville College Thursday before traveling to Milligan College Saturday afternoon.
