Milligan Takes Tight Women’s Hoops Contest from UVA-Wise

Milligan College, TN – Milligan College held on for a tight Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s basketball win over UVA-Wise on Saturday evening. The Lady Buffs led by as many as 12 points in the second half before the Lady Cavs rallied but fell short, 58-55.
Senior Sarah Helton paced the visitors with a third strong game of the week. She made seven of 13 attempts for 17 points and grabbed 15 boards to reach a double-double with three assists and three steals. Chelsea Lee and Terri Ann Hill added 11 and 10 points apiece. Sophomore Kim Norris handed out five assists for UVA-Wise (3-16/2-6 AAC).
Kacie Letterman reached 1,000 career points on the night and finished with 14 and four assists. Rikki Baughman had her own double-double for Milligan (8-8/4-4 AAC) of 16 tallies and 11 caroms with six steals. Leah Anderson chipped in 11 points.
UVA-Wise, despite trailing by as many as 10 points, battled back to pull within a single point, 25-24, at intermission.
Milligan pushed its the lead out to 12 points, 41-29, after Brittany Kilgore's free throw with 11:48 left in the contest.
The Lady Cavs regained its composure and made a tight ending. With under three minutes, Hill made a basket to make the cut the Milligan lead down to one, 51-50. Hali Sparks hit a basket to make the margin three points and the Lady Buffs drained five free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 58-55 victory.
UVA-Wise will return to Greear Gym for a Tuesday evening 5:30 p.m. tilt against Union College.
