Helton Sisters Lead the UVA-Wise Runaway over Union

Wise, VA – The Helton sisters lead the UVA-Wise women’s basketball team to a runaway win over Union College Tuesday evening. Rachel Helton hit a career-high 32 points to surpass the 1,000-point plateau for her career while Sarah Helton added 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 91-75 win over Union.
UVA-Wise improved to 4-16 overall and moved up to 3-6 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Union dropped to 11-9 and 4-5 in the league.
Rachel Helton made her first eight shots and 12 of 18 on the night including five three-pointers in her best evening of her Lady Cavs’ career for 32 points. She needed 28 points to reach 1,000 points and ended the night with 1,004. Sarah Helton scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half while grabbing 13 rebounds. Chelsea Lee handed out a career-best 13 assists. Sheila Royall chipped in 11 points.
UVA-Wise hit 58.3% from the floor (35 of 60) for the night. The Lady Cavs also stole 13 balls from the Lady Bulldogs.
Susanna Todd, Carley Blankenship and Allison Fowler reached double digits for Union with 16, 14 and 11 tallies.
Leading 26-21 with 8:36 in the opening half, the Lady Cavs received a three-pointer and a jumper from Rachel Helton followed by a layup by Sarah Helton as part of a 12-0 spurt to make it 38-21. The home team had a lead of no less than 10 points the rest of the game.
After hitting for 22 points in the first half, Rachel Helton wrapped up the final two points of her needed 28 at the foul line with 6:50 in the contest for her 1,000 th point. She joins her sister in the 1,000-point club for the Lady Cavs.
UVA-Wise will now be off until playing a 2:00 p.m. contest at Bryan College on Saturday.
