Lady Cavs Surge to Begin Second Half, Hold on for Close Victory

Wise, VA – After trailing 28-24 at the half, the Lady Cavs opened on a 13-4 run in the second stanza and held on for a close 60-58 women’s basketball win over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival King College Tuesday night.
The Helton sisters combined to score the Lady Cavs’ first eight points, Rachel with a three-pointer and Sarah making two baskets. Chelsea Lee followed by hitting a jumper in the lane at 17:12 to take the lead, 34-32, and would grind out the win the rest of the way never losing the advantage in the 60-58 win. The two contests between the two teams have now been decided by three points as King won 61-60 on Dec. 9 th in Bristol, TN.
Lee led UVA-Wise (6-18/5-9 AAC) with 19 points on eight of 13 shooting with five assists. Sarah Helton added 18 tallies, nine rebounds and five steals. Rachel Helton chipped in 10 points. The Lady Cavs outrebounded the Lady Tornado (16-8/10-3 AAC) 34-28.
Kristi Moody was King’s lone double figure scorer with 18 points on seven of 12 attempts. Whitney Tweed grabbed nine boards while Amanda Holmes and Deidre Ward added eight points.
King led by as many as six points, 8-2, in the opening minutes but the game was tied five times in the first 20 minutes.
After Lee’s jumper, the Lady Cavs saw its margin drop to as little as a single point three times including 53-52 with 5:26 in the game. A layup by Sarah Helton and trey from Crystal Ratcliffe ( Abingdon, VA) pushed it back to six points before Tweed made the game’s final points with 1:49 left in the game.
UVA-Wise will try for its first three-game win streak of the year at Tennessee Wesleyan for a 2:00 p.m. contest Saturday.
