Milligan Wins Final Minute to Spoil UVA-Wise ‘Senior Night’

Wise, VA – In a one-point game, Milligan College was able to win the final minute of action and spoil the UVA-Wise ‘Senior Night’ on Tuesday with a tight 75-71 women’s hoops win.
The Lady Buffs improve to 16-12 and 10-7 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference while the Lady Cavs drop to 8-21 and 6-11 in the league.
The defeat spoiled the last home game of the five UVA-Wise seniors. Sarah Helton led the veteran with a big 19-point and 18-rebound effort. Rachel Helton hit six of nine triples and produced a team-best 20 points. Chelsea Lee chipped in 17 points and handed out six assists while Terri Ann Hill added 12 tallies. LaShay Collier, who has been injured the entire season after the sixth game, made a valiant last appearance and had two rebounds in 11 minutes before exiting.
Rikki Baughman led Milligan with 20 points on eight of 13 attempts and nine caroms. Brittany Kilgore dumped in 14 points off the visiting bench.
The opening half featured a run by both teams but the intermission score was a 36-36 deadlock.
Milligan enjoyed the largest lead in the second half of five points, 47-42, with 12:37 remaining. Lee dropped a trey and Sarah Helton added a jumper around two Lady Buffs’ free throws by Kara Monk for a 49-49 tie.
The contest had four more ties before Lee knocked down a jumper to put the home team in front, 70-69, with 1:11 on the clock. Baughman made a conventional three-point play and Kacie Letterman added a free throw for a 73-70 Milligan advantage with 23 ticks. Lauren Jervis made a free throw for UVA-Wise a second later but could not get the lead back to fall 75-71 after two of four foul shots by Milligan in the last seconds.
UVA-Wise will round out its regular season Saturday afternoon at Union College for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
