Union Blitzes UVA-Wise in Second Half for Win

Barbourville, KY – After a tight first half, Union College blitzed the UVA-Wise women’s hoops team in the second stanza to post a going away 99-69 victory Saturday.

Sarah Helton paced the Lady Cavs (8-22/6-12 Appalachian Athletic Conference) with 22 points. Sarah reached the 1,000 career rebound mark by pulling down her first one of the day and finished with eight. Terri Ann Hill added 15 points on four of eight shooting and three assists. Chelsea Lee chipped in 14 points. The team made only 23 of 68 attempts for 33.8% in the game and were outrebounded 33-20.

Union (16-14/8-10 AAC) had five double figure scorers led by Brooke Smith’s 33 points on 14 of 19 attempts, 11 caroms and six blocked shots. Andrea Hillard had 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Susanna Todd, Ashley Lunsford and Allison Fowler added 12, 11 and 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs made 23 of 36 (63.9%) in the deciding second half.

After a Rachel Helton three-pointer made it 37-37 with 45 seconds gone in the second half, Union scored the next 11 points, 48-37, and never trailed again. Sarah Helton made a basket with 10:16 in the game to make the difference seven tallies, 64-57. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 9-0 spurt to put the game away from there to eventually win 99-69.

In the opening five minutes, UVA-Wise led by as many as four points, 10-6, on a Lee jumper. Union came back and had the lead by six points two times. A Sarah Helton triple put the Lady Cavs ahead 34-33 before Smith made a basket for a 35-34 halftime lead.

The Lady Cavs will now be off until playing the first round of the AAC tournament next Thursday at King College.
