Shawnee State Wins Last Two Minutes and Game Over UVA-Wise

Portsmouth, OH – Jill Cropper dropped a jumper for host Shawnee State with 1:18 left in the game to take the lead for good over UVA-Wise women’s basketball. The 24 th-ranked Lady Mountaineers outscored the Lady Cavs, 9-3, in the final minute to prevail 67-62 in the opening night of the Shawnee State Buffalo Wild Wings Classic.
The loss was the second to a ranked opponent on the season for UVA-Wise as it drops to 1-3. Shawnee State improved to 3-2 on the season. The Lady Cavs will face 2 nd-ranked Cedarville College for a 12:00 p.m. contest on Saturday afternoon.
Point guard Chelsea Lee led UVA-Wise with 17 points, five assists and four steals. Sarah Helton produced a double-double with 13 points on six of 12 shooting and 10 rebounds. LaShay Collier was the third double digit scorer with 10 tallies. Rachel Helton added nine points.
After Terri Ann Hill hit the game’s first basket, Shawnee State fell behind just one more time in the first half for a 33-30 intermission advantage. The home team opened its largest lead of the game of 10 points, 48-38, with 12:16 left in the contest.
The Lady Cavs battled back with an 8-0 run capped by two free throws by Hill to make it 48-46 at 8:40. UVA-Wise continued its comeback until Sarah Helton laid the ball in for a 51-50 lead with 4:51 to go. Collier and Hill connected for back-to-back three-pointers for the visitors’ biggest lead, 59-55, with only 2:15.
Shawnee State scored the game’s next nine points for the game-winning run, 64-59. Rachel Helton hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds in the game but was not enough for UVA-Wise to fall 67-62.
