Wise, VA – The Bryan College women’s basketball team continued its magic over the UVA-Wise squad Tuesday evening. The Lady Lions outlasted a furious comeback from the Lady Cavs to pull out a 70-62 win to open Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Chelsea Lee buried eight of 13 shots for 21 points to go with seven assists and five rebounds to pace the Lady Cavs’ effort. Sarah Helton added 12 points and four assists. UVA-Wise was outrebounded 43-33, played without injuried leading scorer LaShay Collier and dropped its fifth-straight game to a preseason ranked NAIA opponent.
After falling behind 15-0 in the opening six minutes, UVA-Wise (1-6/0-1 AAC) drew to within 10 points, 35-25, by putting in the final eight points of the opening stanza. The Lady Cavs continued to chip away at the margin and had the difference down to as few as four points, 49-45, halfway through the second 20 minutes.
UVA-Wise captured what would be a short lived lead, 56-54, on a Sarah Helton three-pointer from the left corner with 5:26 in the game. Defending AAC regular season champ, Bryan (7-3/1-0 AAC) tied the game less than a minute later before a Sarah Coffman trey with 3:57 put the visitors ahead for good. Bryan outscored the home team 14-6 in the final four minutes for the 70-62 score.
Katie Davis led Bryan with 23 points while Kellie Thurman, Coffman and Ashley Gray joined her in double digits with 13, 12 and 11 points. Coffman added nine rebounds and four assists.
UVA-Wise will try to rebound Saturday evening against Covenant College starting at 5:30 p.m.
