Covenant Takes UVA-Wise Women’s Hoops

Wise, VA – The downward spiral continued for the UVA-Wise women’s basketball team Saturday night. Covenant College Lady Scots extended the Lady Cavs losing streak to six games with an 85-68 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory.
Sophomore Liz Martin pumped in a game-high 31 points with 11 of 12 free throws and seven assists to take Covenant to 7-3 on the year and 2-0 in the AAC. Natalea Gulyas produced a double-double with 18 points and 16 boards. Lyndee Biles added 13 points and five steals. The Lady Scots outrebounded the Lady Cavs 43-34 and held the home to 34.4% from the floor.
UVA-Wise (1-7/0-2 AAC) had a career-best game from Kim Norris ( Eidson, TN) of 15 points on four of eight shooting and five assists. Sarah Helton had a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Cavs enjoyed its largest lead of four points, 10-6, early in the opening five minutes on a Crystal Ratcliffe (Abingdon, VA) three-pointer.
Tied 27-27 at 6:27 in the opening half, Erin McNerney’s three-pointer started a 14-0 run by the Lady Scots over the next four minutes to pull ahead 41-27. UVA-Wise slightly cut into the difference by the half, 45-35.
The Lady Cavs pull to within six points two times with the second, 59-53, with 7:18 on the clock. Covenant squashed any comeback hopes by putting the next eight points on the board with six coming from Martin to make it 68-53 before taking an 85-68 victory.
UVA-Wise will take to the road Tuesday night for a 5:30 p.m. game at Virginia Intermont.
