Lady Cavs Balance Just Enough to Take Lady Cobras

Wise, Va. – Lauren Jervis led five double figure scorers as the UVa-Wise balance had just enough balance to take Virginia Intermont in Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s basketball. Jervis posted 12 points, 16 rebounds and six assists as the Lady Cavs prevailed 75-73.

The 16-rebound effort was a career-high for Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.). The Lady Cavs (3-9/1-2 AAC) received a team-high 18 points from freshman Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) on seven of 10 shooting. Meghan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) recorded a double-double as well with 12 tallies and 10 boards. Guards Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) and Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) rounded off the output with 16 and 12 points.

Freshman Haley Odle of Virginia Intermont (3-4/1-2 AAC) was the force of its team. Odle made 11 of 18 attempts for 26 points and grabbed eight caroms. Kendra Newman hit six triples for 20 tallies while Autumn Arney had a double-double of 16 rebounds and 11 points.

UVa-Wise put together a 13-4 run over the last five minutes of the first half to take a 10-point advantage before a Newman three-pointer cut the margin to 37-30 at the half.

The Lady Cobras came out strong to open the latter stanza. They ran off a 7-2 to spurt to tie the game, 39-39, in the first four minutes. The contest was tied two more times before the Lady Cavs worked a lead to 12 points, 65-53, over the next 10 minutes with 5:15 left in the contest. The difference never went below four points the final five minutes until Newman hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer for the 75-73 final.

UVa-Wise will stay at home and host King College on Saturday evening for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
