King Fends Off UVa-Wise

Wise, Va. – After a fierce UVa-Wise comeback to start the first nine minutes of the second half, King College fended off the rally and went on for the 61-49 women’s basketball Appalachian Athletic Conference victory.
Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) paced UVa-Wise (3-10/1-3 AAC) with 16 points while junior Mindy Carter (Bristol, Tenn.) had a season-high 13 tallies on six of 11 attempts. Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.) grabbed 11 boards and handed out six assists on the night.
King (4-6/3-1 AAC) saw Amanda Holes dump in eight of 13 attempts for a game-best 17 points. Bethany Wilson chipped in eight points while clutching 10 rebounds. The visitors committed just 11 turnovers.
The Lady Tornado held a 31-16 first half advantage after holding the Lady Cavs (3-10, 1-3 AAC) to just eight buckets. UVa-Wise came out of the half by outscoring King 21-9 over the first nine minutes behind two triples by Brittany Maxwell and three baskets from Womack to tie the affair, 40-40.
With the game tied, King regained its composure after a timeout at 11:15. The visitors went on a key 10-2 spurt over the next three minutes capped by a Wilson jumper at 6:48 for a 52-42 lead. The Lady Cavs would get no closer than seven points, 56-49, with 3:42 left before the 61-49 final.
UVa-Wise will now be off for finals week before heading to the Union College Classic on December 28-29.
