IUS Uses Strong Second Half Opening to Get Past UVa-Wise

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Indiana-Southeast outscored UVa-Wise by 14 points in the first 12 minutes of the second half to open a 61-41 lead before posting a 72-63 women’s basketball victory at the second day of the Union College Holiday Classic.

Kim Norris dropped seven of 10 shots including both three-point attempts for a team-high 20 points to go with two assists and two steals. Brittany Maxwell added 14 tallies and three assists. Meghan Rutherford was the third Lady Cav (3-12) double digit scorer with 13. Lauren Jervis grabbed nine boards and dished four assists.

Andrea Chambers scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to guide the Grenadiers (7-7). Chambers was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and nailed all three of her 3-point attempts in registering her 22 points. Tiffani Slaughter added 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots.

IUS struggled to find its stroke as UVa-Wise built a 16-4 lead with 11:45 to go in the first. Kim Norris accounted for nine of UVa-Wise’s first 16 points. IUS roared back thanks 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Using a 19-4 run, IUS seized a 23-19 lead following a Whitney Duncan bucket with 5:05 left.

After a Norris basket, the score was tied at 23-all with 4:01 on the clock. However, IUS received back-to-back 3-pointers from Megan Bunch and Brittany Caple to open up a 32-25 lead en route to a 37-31 halftime cushion.

IUS wasted little time in seizing control of things in the second half, utilizing a 24-10 rally to open up a 61-41 advantage with 8:30 to play. The margin hovered around 16-20 points for rest of the way until UVa-Wise closed out the game with a 11-1 run to make the final 72-63.

IUS dominated the glass, outrebounding UVa-Wise by a 51-36 margin. The Lady Cavs struggled making foul shots for a second day with just 15 of 22 attempts falling through the basket.

The Lady Cavs will return to action on January 9 th for an Appalachian Athletic Conference affair at Tennessee Wesleyan starting at 5:30 p.m.
