Wright Leads Montreat Second Half Explosion to Down UVa-Wise Women’s Hoops

Wise, Va. – Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Week Charzaree Wright proved her worth for the award on Saturday afternoon. Wright scored 28 points, 18 in the second half, to lead Montreat to a 48-point stanza to overtake UVa-Wise, 66-44, in women’s basketball.
UVa-Wise (3-14/1-5 AAC) received 13 points from Meghan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) as the top scorer. Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns-Bennett) added 10 points on five of 11 tries as the other double digit scorer. Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) chipped in nine points.
Wright hit 13 of 14 attempts including all nine second half tries for her 28-point outing. She grabbed eight rebounds. Kimberly Staley added 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
After a low-scoring 18-16 first half in favor of Montreat, the visitors went on a 12-2 spurt in the opening six minutes for a 30-20 score. A Rutherford triple and Jervis layup pulled UVa-Wise to within six, 30-24, only to see Montreat (8-8/2-4 AAC) go on a second 12-2 run in the first 10 minutes for its biggest lead 42-26. Montreat was never challenged again to complete the 66-44 victory.
The Lady Cavs will next travel to Bluefield College for 5:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, January 15.
