Lady Buffs Inside Trio Too Much for Lady Cavs

Wise, Va. – The Milligan College inside trio of Heather Mandela, Leah Anderson and Rikki Baughman blistered the nets for a combined 65 points and 25 rebounds to prove to be too much for UVa-Wise, 86-72, in women’s hoops Saturday afternoon.

For the Lady Cavs (4-15/2-6 AAC), Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) tallied 16 points and six rebounds. Meghan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) added 13 points while Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) and Shandi Edwards (Abingdon, Va.) had 11 and 10. Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.) chipped in eight points and nine boards.

Mandela led all players by far with 27 points on 12 of 16 shooting for the Lady Buffs (10-10/7-1 AAC). Anderson hit five triples for 19 points while Baughman had a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Leading 6-4, Milligan controlled the game early with a 13-0 run over a four minute stretch to surge ahead, 19-4, behind eight Mandela points. The visitors had their way the rest of the first half to lead 44-30 at intermission.

UVa-Wise made its biggest run of the afternoon in the first five minutes of the latter stanza. The Lady Cavs cut the deficit twice to seven points, 46-39 and 48-41, but the Lady Buffs had the answer each time. Milligan led by no less than nine points the rest of the way before completing the 86-72 Appalachian Athletic Conference win.

The Lady Cavs will travel to AAC co-leader Union College for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, January 22 nd.
