20th-Ranked Union Women Prevails Over UVa-Wise

Barbourville, Ky. – The 20 th-ranked Union College Lady Bulldogs broke open the women’s basketball game midway through the first half to take an 83-59 victory over the UVa-Wise Lady Cavs in Appalachian Athletic Conference action Tuesday night.
Freshman Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) provided the scoring punch for UVa-Wise (4-16/2-7 AAC) with 17 points on seven of 11 shots and six rebounds. Meghan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) grabbed 12 boards and added nine points. Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.) chipped in nine points and pulled down eight caroms.
Sophomore standout Brooke Smith of Union (15-5/8-1 AAC) made 11 of 18 attempts for 25 points. Susanna Todd hit seven triples for 24 points.
The Lady Cavs trailed by just 14-10 on a Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) basket with 12:52 in the opening half. The Lady Bulldogs put the next 12 points on the board in two minutes and were never challenged again. Union led 49-26 at intermission before playing evenly with the visitors and taking an 83-59 final.
UVa-Wise will return home for a pair of games this weekend against Covenant College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night and Bryan College on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
