UVa-Wise Women Fight Hard but Fall to Covenant

January 25, 2008
BOXSCORE

Wise, Va. – UVa-Wise fought hard but fell short against one of the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s best Covenant College Friday night. The Lady Cavs’ Meghan Rutherford powered in a season-best 26-point effort but saw the Lady Scots pull away late for the 81-67 win.

Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) made nine of 18 attempts for her 26 points to go with six rebounds for UVa-Wise (4-17/2-8 AAC). Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) was solid with 15 points, nine caroms and five assists. Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) dropped in 14 tallies and grabbed eight boards.

The Lady Scots (15-4/8-2 AAC) had a balanced attack with six double figure scorers led by Candace Lee’s 14. Liz Martin had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

After trailing by as many as 13 points six minutes into the game, UVa-Wise whittled the difference down to two points, 37-35, on an Ashley Reese (Vienna, Va.) free throw

The Lady Cavs opened the second half strong with a 7-2 spurt for a three-point lead, 42-39, on a Maxwell traditional three-point play. The Lady Scots netted the next six points and would never look back. The visitors build the lead up to 19 points, 72-53, with 6:20 left before winning 81-67.

UVa-Wise will stay at home for a 4:00 p.m. clash against the AAC’s Bryan College Saturday afternoon.
