Lady Lions Second Half Hold off Lady Cavs

Wise, Va. – The Lady Cavaliers balance scoring led by Adrienne Womack’s 17-point effort was not enough to make similar balance by the Lady Lions Saturday afternoon. Bryan produced a strong final 13 minutes to pull away from UVa-Wise women’s hoops, 82-63.
Womack (Floyd, Va.) made six of 10 shot for her 17 points to go with eight rebounds for the Lady Cavs (4-18/2-9 Appalachian Athletic Conference). Meghan Rutherford added 14 points and six boards while both Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) and Shandi Edwards (Abindgon, Va.) contributed 13 tallies apiece.
Bryan (5-15/3-7 AAC) dominated the glass by a 38-23 margin while making half of its shots (26 of 52). Katie Davis dropped in 20 points to lead all scorers with five treys. Courtney Swanson added 16 points as the top two of four double figure players.
The Lady Lions led by 11 points, 15-4, in the early going. The Lady Cavs rallied back to eventually take a 22-20 lead on a Edwards triple. The teams traded spurts before the visitors five of the last seven points for a 37-30 half score.
Bryan ballooned the margin to 14 points, 47-33, in the first three minutes before UVa-Wise clawed back to within five, 47-42, at the 13:55 mark. The Lady Lions posted the next seven points and never led by fewer than eight points before taking away the 82-63 road league victory.
UVa-Wise will be off until hosting Alice Lloyd College on Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
