First Half Drought Dooms Lady Cavs Against Eagles

Wise, Va. – After a Shandi Edwards jumper to take a four-point lead, the UVa-Wise women’s basketball offense hit a nine minute drought and Alice Lloyd took advantage with a 25-0 game-changing run. The Eagles rode the big run the rest of the game to take a going away 80-57 victory.
The freshmen inside duo of Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) and Meghan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) paced the Lady Cavs (4-19) with 16 and 12 points. Womack added seven rebounds and six assists while Rutherford snatched six boards and blocked two shots. Brittany Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) chipped in nine while Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) and Edwards (Abingdon, Va.) had eight points apiece.
Kaylan Richardson led all scorers with 22 points for Alice Lloyd (9-10). Taran Cody added 14 points while Lyndsey Mahon contributed 10 tallies and grabbed nine caroms.
After being down 44-24 at the half, UVa-Wise cut the difference to 15 points, 68-53, with 6:39 from as many as 29 points in the opening three minutes of the second half. The Lady Cavs could get no closer than the same 15 points margin two more times before bowing 80-57.
UVa-Wise will travel to Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Virginia Intermont for a Saturday night contest starting at 5:30 p.m.
