Lady Rams Hold on to Upset Lady Cavs Hoops

February 16, 2008
BOXSCORE

Wise, Va. – In the final minute, Bluefield College netted five of the last six points of the game to hold on to upset the UVa-Wise women’s basketball team, 69-66, Saturday afternoon. Brittany Maxwell had her second 20-point outing of the year against the Lady Rams with a game-best 21 points.

Tied 65-65 with 1:30 on the clock, Bluefield’s Kayla Lewis drove into the lane and dished to Misty Neel for the layup and lead it would not give up. UVa-Wise’s Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.) made one of two free throws with 26 seconds before the visitors’ Jessica Brokaw connected on both of her shots to make it 69-66 with eight seconds. As time expired, Meghan Rutherford launched a potential game-tying three-pointer which fell short to give Bluefield the upset.

Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) hit five of eight attempts, making all five triple tries, and six of six from the line for the 21-point effort to go with a career-high seven boards. Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) connected for 16 points and nine rebounds. Rutherford added eight points and Jervis clutched nine rebounds. The Lady Cavs (5-23/3-13 Appalachian Athletic Conference) committed 21 turnovers while shooting over nine-percent better than their opponents.

Bluefield (2-24/1-15 AAC) made 13 of 46 three-point tries. Holly Hudson, Brokaw and Jodi Smith drained four from long-range apiece for 14, 14 and 12 tallies.

UVa-Wise led by as many as 10 points, 19-9, with 9:42 in the first half before Bluefield chipped away and tied the game, 23-23, at 2:13. The Lady Cavs enjoyed a 41-39 advantage at intermission.

Both teams enjoyed a two possession lead over the first 10 minutes of the latter half. The fifth tie of the half came with 1:31 remaining on two Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) free throws to see up the final minute action.

UVa-Wise will finish its regular season road schedule with a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday night at Milligan College.
