Four Double Figure Scorers and Strong First Half Lead to Lady Cavs AAC Win

Bristol, Tenn. – After two solid outings in defeats last week, UVa-Wise put everything together in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon. Brittany Maxwell led the Lady Cavs with 21 points as one of four double figurers scorers who rode a strong first half over the Virginia Intermont Lady Cobras, 80-67.
UVa-Wise (6-25) snapped a four-game losing streak and posted its second win in three contests over Virginia Intermont (7-24), which the Lady Cavs defeated 75-73 on January 4. UVa-Wise will move onto the quarterfinals on Thursday night when it will play second seeded Union College in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) down all three of her trey attempts and 10 of 12 free throws for her 21-point effort as the Lady Cavs made eight of 14 three-pointers in the contest. Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) added 14 points on the inside while Shandi Edwards (Abingdon, Va.) contributed 12 points. Mindy Carter (Bristol, Tenn.) chipped in 10 points including two triples while Lauren Jervis (Kingsport, Tenn.) grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists.
Kendra Newman paced the Lady Cobras with 22 points on nine of 16 shooting. Haley Odle had 13 points and eight caroms.
Leading 19-17, UVa-Wise outscored Virginia Intermont 16-4 over five minutes to rush ahead 35-21 capped by a Maxwell three-pointer. The Lady Cobras battled back to within four points, 35-31, on a 10-0 run before the Lady Cavs scored 11 of the last 15 points to end the opening half to lead 46-35.
Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) hit a jumper three minutes in the latter half for the largest lead of 16 points, 54-38. The margin never went below 11 points over the final 17 minutes until the 80-67 final tally.
The Lady Cavs made a solid 28 of 36 free throw attempts and outrebounded the Lady Cobras, 44-34.
