Lady Cavs Final Attempt Falls Short

November 16, 2007
Boxscore

Wise, Va. – Meghan Rutherford’s game-tying attempt off a missed foul shot fell just short for UVa-Wise as Kentucky Christian to pull out a 60-58 victory Friday night in the opening evening of the UVa-Wise women’s basketball Classic.

Junior guard Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) dropped in seven of nine shots for a career-high 20 points to pace the Lady Cavs (1-4). Adrienne Womack (Floyd, Va.) made six of 10 shots for 16 points. Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) grabbed six boards to go with nine tallies.

Kelsie Thrasher and Alison Wyckoff paced the Lady Knights (8-1) with 15 and 13 points. Kentucky Christian won the glass battle 35-25 and hit 15 of 27 attempts from the floor in the deciding second half.

Shandi Edwards (Abingdon, Va.) drained a triple with 4:23 in the game to make it 48-47 for just the second UVa-Wise lead of the latter half. The advantage would be short lived as Kentucky Christian put the next eight points on the scoreboard for a 55-48 contest. With three seconds left, Womack made an inside layup and was fouled to cut the score to 60-58 with three seconds. The freshman center missed the foul shot and Rutherford pull in the rebound but her put back just fell off the rim to give the Lady Knights the 60-58 final.

UVa-Wise will face Asbury College in the second day of the Classic for a 4:00 p.m. affair.
