Balanced Attack Propels UVa-Wise Women’s Hoops Past Asbury

Wise, Va. – A balanced attack of five double figure scorers helped propel the UVa-Wise women’s hoops team past Asbury College Saturday afternoon in the second day of the UVa-Wise Classic. Sophomore Brittany Maxwell’s three-pointer with just over seven minutes left gave the Lady Cavs for good as she had top point honors with 15 points in the 73-68 victory.
Maxwell (Whitewood, Va.) posted her career-high of 15 points with four treys to lead UVa-Wise (2-4). Shandi Edwards (Wytheville, Va.) hit six of 12 attempts for 14 points while handing out nine assists. Megan Rutherford (Bristol, Va.) totaled a double-double of 11 tallies and 10 rebounds along with two blocks. Kim Norris (Eidson, Tenn.) and Crystal Ratcliffe ( Abingdon, Va.) added 11 and 10 points. The Lady Cavs shot 43.9% from the floor (25 of 57) and stole 12 balls.
Asbury (3-4) tied the contest for the fourth time of the second half, 55-55, with 7:23 in the game. Maxwell drained her fourth triple to give UVa-Wise the lead for good at 7:10. The Lady Cavs would lead by no more than six points, 66-60, down the stretch on a Ratcliffe coast-to-coast layup. The Eagles pulled back to within a point, 68-67, with 1:55 just to see the home team score four the final five points.
The Eagles were paced by Brittany Abbott’s 17 points off the bench. Lindsey Wood and Lauren Lee added 15 and 13 points.
UVa-Wise will now be off until traveling to the West Virginia Tech Classic next Friday and Saturday.

Montreat College broke a tie with 7:50 left in the first half and never trailed again to defeat Kentucky Christian, 68-60, in Saturday’s first game of the UVa-Wise women’s basketball Classic.
