Clintwood, Va. – On Wednesday just before lunch, the future of the UVa-Wise women’s basketball program was able to ink key recruit for its future in Clintwood High’s Kristin Mullins. The all-state first team forward became the fourth important future Lady Cavalier to commit for the 2008-09 academic year.

Mullins will join the UVa-Wise program, which is just two years from an Appalachian Athletic Conference title run, as the most herald player since former two-time NAIA All-American Sarah Helton came to the campus.

The Clintwood product was named to the Virginia All-State Group A first team this year and second team her junior campaign. She was also selected to the 2007-08 Kingsport Times-News Elite Team as well as being the Lonesome Pine District Player of the Year for two years. Mullins earned 2006-07 Region D Player of the Year and 2007-08 Region D First Team.

“Kristin is a very special addition to our team and the coaching staff couldn’t be happier that she has decided to join our program,” exclaims UVa-Wise head coach Rachel Clay-Keohane. “She’s a tremendously talented offensive player, one of the very best to come out of southwest Virginia in some time.”

The senior posted 1,355 career points and finished with a 20.5-point per game average. The numbers include 20 double-doubles this season in 24 contests while having an 18 ppg and nine rpg marks as a junior.

“She is a smart, talented and tough player. Kristin endured a difficult season, having both gall bladder surgery and pneumonia, yet she missed just one game,” pointed out Clay-Keohane.

Mullins is just as outstanding in the classroom as she has been over the years on the basketball court. She will wrap up her scholastic career as the salutatorian and plans to measure in physical therapy after arriving at the Wise campus.
