Tanner Joins Lady Cavs Hoops Squad
July 7, 2008
Wise, Va. – Two-time all-state guard Ashley Tanner is the latest young player to join what should be a vastly improved and more talented 2008-09 UVa-Wise women’s basketball roster. Tanner will make the short trip from Roanoke College to transfer to the Wise campus this fall.
Tanner will join high school teammate Adrienne Womack onto the Lady Cavs arsenal. The two Floyd County Buffalo players helped lead that scholastic program to a 55-2 mark in their final two seasons, losing in the state semi-finals in their junior year and state championship two years ago.
"We are truly excited to add Ashley to the Lady Cav family. She's a smart player with toughness and is a true leader on the court and off,” said UVa-Wise assistant coach Doug Carter. “Simply put, Ashley is a winner and displays all the traits a program needs to compete at the highest levels."
The 5-7 point guard/shooting guard earned Virginia High School League All-State first team her last two seasons while adding the Region C Player of the Year her senior season and Three-Rivers District Player of the Year twice.
Tanner averaged 12 points per game over her last two seasons at Floyd while also shooting 37% from beyond the three point arc. Ashley downed seven three-pointers in a single game for the Buffaloes. She added 3.3 assists, 3.8 steals and 2.7 rebounds per contest.
Tanner attended Roanoke College last season but did not play for the Maroons and will have four years of eligibility at UVa-Wise.
The future Lady Cavs player is the daughter of Shawn and Lisa Tanner and will be studying nursing and education at UVa-Wise this fall.
