Helton nears 1,000 career points in loss to AAC rivals

BRISTOL, Va. -- UVa-Wise sophomore Sarah Helton (Wise, Va./J.J. Kelly High) inched closer to the 1,000 career-points mark Tuesday, scoring 16 against Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Virginia Intermont College in a 73-62 loss to the Cobras in Bristol.
Helton now needs only 14 points to reach the points milestone. She has scored at least 13 points in 19 of her team’s 27 games this year.
With Tuesday’s loss, UVa-Wise drops to 10-11 in the conference and 10-17 for the season.
Four other Lady Cavaliers tallied double figures in scoring against VI. Freshman guard Crystal Ratcliffe (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon High) scored a career-high 14 points, and Terri-Ann Hill (St. Paul, Va./St. Paul High) also added 14 while Chelsea Lee (Pound, Va./Pound High) scored 10.
Virginia Intermont’s Sheena Chesney led all scorers with 18 points. The Cobras’ Ana Medic had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
UVa-Wise plays the final game of its regular season Saturday at King College in Bristol, Tenn. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
