AAC Offers Tournament Webcasts
The Appalachian Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournament begins Wednesday with the Lady Cavaliers challenging Bluefield College at 5:45 p.m. at Virginia High School's Bearcat Den in Bristol. The UVa-Wise men's squad, last year's AAC regular season and tournament champs, received a first-round bye and will play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Wednesday's matchup between Virginia Intermont College and Alice Lloyd College. Fans who are unable to attend the games can keep track of the Cavaliers through live webcasts on the AAC's official web site.
Cavs Hoopsters Prepare for AAC Tourney

WISE, VA - The UVa-Wise men's and women's basketball teams are gearing up for Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament action, which begins Wednesday in Bristol. The UVa-Wise men finished fourth in the AAC regular season race with a 13-9 league mark, 13-17 overall. In the tournament's first round, the Cavaliers will face the winner of Wednesday's (5) Virginia Intermont College/(12)Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College matchup. UVa-Wise will play at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Virginia High School's Bearcat Den. The Cavs, last season's regular season and tournament champs, closed the regular season Saturday with a disappointing 89-84 loss road loss to AAC rival Union College. UVa-Wise senior guard Bobby Hedrick scored a career-high 34 points in the defeat. The Lady Cavaliers (14-14 overall, 11-11 in the AAC) began last week sitting in the AAC's eighth position but finished the regular season in fifth place after two big wins over King College at home and then over Union College on the road in the season finale. The UVa-Wise women begin tournament action at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday against (12) Bluefield College at the Bearcat Den. The Lady Cavaliers were swept by Bluefield (6-20 overall, 5-17 in the AAC) in the two-game season series. However, UVa-Wise enters the tournament on a hot streak, having won two games in a row and five of their last six.
Lady Cavs Drop Covenant on Lee's Free Toss

UVa-Wise freshman Chelsea Lee (Pound, Va.) hit the second of two free throws Saturday with no time remaining on the clock to give the Lady Cavaliers a 59-58 win over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. Freshman Sarah Helton (Wise, Va.) paced UVa-Wise with 19 points and Terri Ann Hill (St. Paul, Va.) added 12. UVa-Wise now stands at 10-13 overall and 7-10 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, the UVa-Wise men's team was not as fortunate, falling to Covenant, 71-65. Bobby Hedrick (Hampton, Va.) led UVa-Wise with 20 points and junior Chris Papst (Aschura, Germany) scored 12. The loss drops the Cavaliers, who have dropped five of their last six games, to 10-15 overall and 10-7 in the conference. Both UVa-Wise teams travel to Bristol Tuesday for games with Virginia Intermont College. The women tip-off at 5:30 p.m., and the men begin at 7:30 p.m.

BRISTOL, TN - The UVa-Wise Lady Cavaliers dropped their second consecutive contest with a tough 72-41 loss to the Lady Tornado in King's Student Center Tuesday. Freshman Terri Ann Hill led the Cavaliers with 12 points while grabbing five rebounds. Freshman Sarah Helton had nine rebounds for UVa-Wise, who slipped to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the AAC. The UVa-Wise men's and women's teams return to the Greear Gymnasium floor Thursday for conference matches with Union College. The Lady Cavs tip-off at 5:30 p.m., and the men's game begins at 7:30 p.m. Those games begin a four-game home stretch for the UVa-Wise cagers.
Lady Cavs Top AAC Rival

WISE, VA - Sophomore Caroline Baca (St. Paul, Va./St. Paul High) battled injuries throughout Saturday's contest with Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bryan College and led UVa-Wise with 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds. However, the Cavaliers were unable to overcome the talented Bryan squad and fell 60-48 to the Lions in UVa-Wise's Greear Gymnasium. Freshman Sarah Helton (Wise, Va./J.J. Kelly High) chipped in 11 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss that dropped UVa-Wise to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the conference. UVa-Wise trailed by only four points (27-23) at the half, however Bryan staged an early second half run to build a comfortable advantage. One reason for Bryan's success was the scoring and rebounding of junior guard Liz Bass, who tallied a game-high 19 points and hauled in 10 boards. Bryan improved to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in the AAC with the victory. UVa-Wise next travels to Bristol, Tenn., Tuesday for an AAC date with King College. The Lady Cavs return home Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. contest with Union (Ky.) College in Greear Gym.

Caroline Baca scored a season-high 19 points and freshman Sarah Helton added 17 to help UVa-Wise score a 79-67 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College Thursday in Pippa Passes, Ky. The Lady Cavaliers, who hit nearly 53 percent of their field goals in the contest, climbed to within a win of the .500 mark with a 6-7 overall record. UVa-Wise is 2-4 in the AAC. Two other starters tallied double figures for the Cavs. Freshmen Chelsea Lee and Rachel Helton scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. The UVa-Wise women have a day to rest before making their return to Greear Gymnasium for the first time since mid-November. The Lady Cavaliers host AAC foe Bryan College at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Lady Cavs Drop Non-conference Contest

PIKEVILLE, KY - The UVa-Wise women's cagers returned to the hardwood for the first time in nearly a month Tuesday looking to climb back to the .500 mark with their fifth win in six games. Sophomore Caroline Baca and freshman Sarah Helton each scored 13 points for UVa-Wise, but homestanding non-conference foe Pikeville (Ky.) College took a 73-63 victory and improved its overall record to 9-8 for the season. UVa-Wise, which now stands at 5-7 overall, also got 12 points and five assists from freshman point guard Chelsea Lee and 11points from freshman Rachel Helton. Jessica Owens, the lone Lady Cavaliers senior, came off the bench to score eight points, hitting two of three shots from beyond the three-point arc. Pikeville's Ashley Wireman led all scorers with 17 points. UVa-Wise will not have to wait long to go for its next win. The Lady Cavaliers travel Thursday to Pippa Passes, Ky., for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff with Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Alice Lloyd College. UVa-Wise defeated Alice Lloyd 91-72 earlier in the season in Wise. The Lady Eagles are 3-13 this season. Also, the UVa-Wise men play at Alice Lloyd at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Cavs Notes: Tipoff times for Saturday's men's and women's basketball games at UVa-Wise's Greear Gymnasium have changed. The women take to the court at 4 p.m. against Bryan (Tenn.) College and the men play Bryan at 6 p.m. …A replay of Tuesday's Lady Cavaliers basketball game against Pikeville can been seen on CAVS-TV on UVa-Wise Channel 55 at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Lady Cavs Win Four of Five Road Contests

WISE, VA - After winning four of their last five games, the UVa-Wise Lady Cavaliers will enjoy the luxuary of a few weeks off from game action before returning to the hardcourt. The Cavaliers last played on Dec. 7, falling to Berea College on the road. Before that game, however, UVa-Wise had clawed its way to an even 5-5 record with four consecutive road wins that included a tournament championship at Bluefield (W.Va.) State College. The Cavaliers also grabbed victories over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat (N.C.) College and non-conferece foe Asbury (Ky.) College. The next court date for the Lady Cavs is a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Pikeville (Ky.) College.
Lady Cavaliers Fall in Lions Den, 70-58

DAYTON, TN - Freshman Sarah Helton (Wise, Va./J.J. Kelly High) hit nine of 15 shots for a team-high 26 points and hauled in 11 rebounds, but UVa-Wise fell short to homestanding Bryan College, 70-58, Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference action. No other Cavaliers scored in double figures, however, Megan Fleming had an impressive game coming in off the bench. The freshman from Clintwood hit two of four shots from the field and made three of four free throws while grabbing four rebounds. Freshman Terri Ann Hill (St. Paul, Va./St. Paul High) contributed six points and five rebounds for the Cavaliers, who now are 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Bryan's Lizz Bass led all scorers with 29 points. UVa-Wise returns to the hardcourt Friday when they begin play in the Herb Sims Tournament at Bluefield State (W.Va.) College. There, the Lady Cavaliers will be in competition with Bluefield State, Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College and Southern Virginia College.
Lady Cavs Fall to Covenant
WISE, VA - UVa-Wise led by four points at halftime, 28-24, over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Covenant College Friday in Greear Gymnasium. The Lady Scots, however, quickly rallied in the second half to score a 72-56 victory over the Lady Cavaliers. Freshman Sarah Helton led UVa-Wise with 13 points and freshman Chelsea Lee added a career-high 11. The Cavaliers now stand at 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

WISE, VA - UVa-Wise staged a late rally Tuesday night but fell just short in its come-from-behind attempt, dropping a 64-55 decision to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bluefield College in Greear Gymnasium. Freshman Sarah Helton hit for a team-leading 14 points and Terri Ann Hill and Kim Ratliff added nine each for the Lady Cavaliers, who fell to 1-1 in the AAC and 1-2 overall. UVa-Wise has a couple of days off before hosting conference foe Covenant College at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Greear Gym.
Helton Leads Lady Cavs to Conference Victory
Freshman Sarah Helton scored a game-high 37 points and grabbed six rebounds Saturday to lead UVa-Wise to an impressive 91-72 win over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Alice Lloyd College. Helton's twin sister Rachel Helton and senior Jessica Owens each scored 14. UVa-Wise improved to 1-0 in the AAC and 1-1 overall. Up next, the Lady Cavaliers host conference rival Bluefield College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Greear Gymnasium.
Lady Cavs Drop Season Opener
Sarah Helton scored 20 points and Rachel Helton added 19, but UVA-Wise was unable to hold off a strong Berea (Ky.) College club Sunday, losing 87-73 to the Mountaineers in Greear Gymnasium. Sophomore Caroline Baca chipped in 14 points on six of nine shooting, and freshman Chelsea Lee added nine. Sarah Helton led the Lady Cavaliers in rebounding with 10, while her sister Rachel grabbed nine. Baca and Chrissy Bowen each had six boards. The Lady Cavaliers, 0-1, return to action at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 against conference rival Alice Lloyd College in Greear Gymnasium.
Lady Cavaliers Open Season November 2
UVA-Wise women's basketball coach Rachel Clay-Keohane and her Lady Cavaliers will begin the 2003-04 season at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2 when they welcome nonconference opponent Berea College to Wise. The Red and Gray women's squad opens the Appalachian Athletic Conference schedule at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 against Alice Lloyd College in the friendly confines of Greear Gymnasium.
