Gregory Takes Second as Cavs Cross Country Runs at Maryville

October 14, 2006

Maryville, TN – Freshman Stephen Gregory raced to second place for his best finish of his first year as the UVA-Wise cross country teams ran at the Maryville College Homecoming Invitational. Six of the eight Cav men posted career-best times while Maureen Seibold place sixth for the women.

UVA-Wise recorded a runner-up finish in the men’s standings with a score of 40, two points behind host and winning team Maryville’s 38. Hiwasee College was third (58) with Lee (115) and Johnson Bible (141) rounding out the field. The Lady Cavs fielded three runners for their 6k race.

The effort on the men's side saw six of the eight runners post career-best times. The men were led by freshman standout Stephen Gregory, who came in 2nd place, with a time of 28:53. The Cavs also received top-10 finishes from senior Sean Stiltner (4th - 29:29) and sophomore Britten Olinger (10th - 30:22) and were followed by junior Seth Collins (11th - 30:32), freshman Derek Bunch (13th - 30:40), freshman Jared Taylor (20th - 32:31), sophomore Austin Taylor (21st - 32:36), and sophomore Bradley Sharpe (24th - 32:55).

The women's team, running a 6K race for the first time this season, was paced by freshman Maureen Seibold, who finished sixth with a time of 27:34, the first individual top 10 finish of the year. Junior Bridget Bevins and sophomore Janice King rounded out the women's team with times of 32:16 and 32:17, respectively.

The Cavs now prepare for a trip to Berea, Kentucky, where they will take part in the Southeast Cross Country Classic on October 21. This race, which draws many of the premiere NAIA distance programs from the southeast, will be the Cavs final tune-up before the Region XII championships next month.
