November 4, 2006
Louisville, KY – Two freshmen runners, Stephen Gregory and Maureen Seibold, had the top performances for the UVA-Wise cross country runners at the Appalachian Athletic Conference/NAIA Region XII Championships held at Tom Sawyer State Park Saturday. The two were part of a strong showing by the Highland Cavaliers as the men placed eighth.
UVA-Wise finished eighth with 204 points while second-ranked Virginia Intermont shutout the field with a perfect score of 15. Bryan College was second (76) and Berea College placed third (88). The Lady Cavs had three runners so they did not score teamwise but Milligan won the race with a 28 score. Virginia Intermont and King were second (47) and third (100) in the women’s field.
Gregory tied his personal best 8K time of the year at 28:53 as the top Cavs’ finisher in 32nd place. Senior Sean Stiltner battled through injuries to round out a solid career with a 37th place finish (29:41). Following Stiltner was sophomore Britten Olinger (41st - 30:21), junior Seth Collins (46th - 30:59), freshman Derek Bunch (48th - 31:24), freshman Jared Taylor (49th - 31:40 - personal best), sophomore Austin Taylor (55th - 32:44), and sophomore Bradley Sharpe (67th - 32:45).
On the women's side, freshman Maureen Seibold finished off an impressive season by finishing with a personal best time of 22:41 in the 5K race, which was good for 44th place and a spot on the AAC All-Freshman Team. The Lady Cavs also got a season-best effort from junior Bridget Bevins, who finished 63rd with a time of 24:40. Sophomore Janice King rounded out the effort, finishing with a time of 24:58 (67th place).
