UVA-Wise Runners Compete against Tough DI Foes

Boone, NC -- The University of Virginia's College at Wise cross country teams took on tough NCAA Division I foes to open
the
2006 season on a rain soaked course at the Appalachian State Covered Bridge Open.
The Highland Cavaliers hung tough despite running in the less than ideal conditions against top competition. UVA-Wise was
lone non DI or DII team and finished 9th in the men's field while the women had only three runners and did not have a
team score.
"Overall, I was fairly pleased with the effort, especially on the men's side. The
course was rainsoaked and, while the Division
I runners quickly separated
themselves from the pack, my guys hung tough and came out with decent times
considering the
tough running conditions. I was especially pleased with freshman
Stephen Gregory, who finished second amongst the CAVS."
Senior Sean Stiltner (Grundy, VA) pace the Cavs' men with a time of 29:56.60 (50th) over the 8K race. Freshman Stephen Gregory
(54th) and sophomore Erick Horton (55th) were the next two finishers in 30:21.56 and 30:38.47. The final three men, junior
Seth Collins (Castlewood, VA), freshman Derek Bunch (Clintwood, VA) and sophomore Britten Olinger
came
across in consecutive
placings of 59th (32:12.28), 60th (33:10.47) and 61st (35:00.83).
Junior Brittney Mullins (Wise, VA) was the top of the three Lady Cavs. She ran 24:19.57 over the 5k race while freshman
Maureen Seibold (24:39.53) and sophomore Janice King (25:19.32) rounded out the trio.
The team now heads to the prestigious Eye-Opneer Invitational in Spartanburg, SC next Saturday. This is a meet made up
of predominantly DII, NAIA, and JUCO schools, providing us with some great, yet comparable competition.
