Cavs’ Killough Finishes 8 th at NAIA Reg. XII/AAC Championships, Makes Nationals

Elizabethton, Tenn. – UVa-Wise’s Brittany Killough ran her way to an eighth place finish at the NAIA Region XII/Appalachian Athletic Conference championships on Saturday morning. Killough’s eighth place finish earned her a trip to the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in two weeks.

The Highland Cavaliers saw the women take fifth in the AAC and eight in the region. On the men’s side, the squad was seventh in the league and eighth in the region standings.

Killough came across the 5k finish line in 19:04.9 for eighth. The Wise, Va. native is the first NAIA National Qualifier under Cavs’ cross country head coach Jason Lewkowicz. She also earned All-Region XII, All-AAC and AAC Freshman of the Year acclaim. Killough will now move to represent the Lady Cavs at the national championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin on November 17 th.

Teammate Tamara Haack joined Killough on the AAC All-Freshman team after placing 34 th AAC/44 th Region with a time of 22:37.5. Sophomore Maureen Seibold had a solid outing with a time of 23:12.9 for 38 th AAC/52 nd Region. Therese McMahon, Leah Arthur and Brandi Bailey rounded out the Lady Cavs’ finishers with times of 24:06.8 (42 nd AAC/60 th Region), 24:23.8 (44 th AAC/64 th Region) and 31:39.4 (53 rd AAC/83 rd Region). The Lady Cavs number two runner sophomore Desirae Killough ran the first 1.5 miles but had to withdraw after aggravating a hamstring injury.

The men saw freshman Collin Skeen continued to pace its squad. Skeen picked up AAC All-Freshman team honors with a 13 th AAC/15 th Region placing with a time of 27:31.4 in the 8k event. Sophomore Stephen Gregory was the next UVa-Wise runner in 21 st AAC/25 th Region (28:30.9).

The men were without their number three runner Spencer Adams who was out due to an injury. Britten Olinger was the third finisher in 31:11.7 (44 th AAC/60 th Region). Landon Smith and Aaron McMahon posted personal best times and were a second apart at 31:40.6 (47 th AAC/66 th Region) and 31:41.7 (48th AAC/67th Region). Derek Bunch was the final UVa-Wise runner in 35:16.3 (60th AAC/85th Region).
