Three in Top Seven As Lady Cavs Miss First by One at Tusculum

Greeneville , Tenn. – The UVa-Wise women will be more than Brittany Killough in 2008 as she was joined by Brittany Butler and Mary Catharine Phipps in the top seven as the team missed first by one place at the Tusculum Invitational.
The Lady Cavs recorded a score of 43 points while Carson-Newman and Milligan tied at 42. Carson-Newman won the title courtesy of the tie-breaker.
Killough started her second season for the Lady Cavs in strong fashion by taking second. She ran the 5k in 19:33.1. She was joined by freshman Butler (5 th, 21:10.6) and Phipps (7 th, 21:58.0).
Kayla Balthis had a good first college race with an 11 th place posting in 22:20.0. Maureen Seibold rounded out the scoring top five in 18 th (25:37.3).
Desirae Killough and Tamara Haack completed the Lady Cavs runners on the day in 19 th (26:19.8) and 21 st (30:01.6).
The women return to action next Saturday, Sept. 6 th at the Spartanburg Methodist Eye-Opener Invitational.
Trio of Top Five Cavs Lead to Men’s Title at Tusculum Invitational

Greeneville , Tenn. – The UVa-Wise men’s runners started the 2008 season in style by having Collin Skeen, Max Frankel and Spencer Adams place in the top five to win the Tusculum Invitational. The Cavs ran away with the title by 33 points over second place Milligan College.
UVa-Wise posted a team score of 28 while Milligan, Carson-Newman and Tusculum were bunched together at 61, 62 and 65.
Host Tusculum had a run away individual winner in Simon Holzapfel who won the race in 27:47.9, over 41 seconds better than Skeen (28:28.6) of UVa-Wise.
Frankel had a solid first collegiate run with a third place time of 29:11.0. Sophomore Spencer Adams cross the line in fifth at 29:56.3.
Three freshmen rounded out the other UVa-Wise runners. Spencer Brenner was fourth on the team in 13 th (31:25.3), Reece Miller came in 19 th (32:39.8) and Richard Martindell posted 24 th (34:02.6).
UVa-Wise will return to action next Saturday at the Spartanburg Methodist Eye-Opener Invitational.
