Killough Earns AAC Runner of the Week, Cavs Take Part in DI UNCC Meet

Charlotte, N.C. – Brittany Killough earned the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women’s Runner of the Week as she led the young and new UVa-Wise track teams last weekend. Killough captured 22 nd in the 1500 meters and 27 th in the 800 meters of the predominately NCAA DI UNC-Charlotte 49er Classic meet over the weekend.
Highland Cavalier cross country team members opened up the outdoor track season by taking part in the UNC-Charlotte 49er Classic. In a field of predominantly NCAA Division I opponents, the UVa-Wise contingent was able to hold their own against a high level of competition.
On Friday night under the lights, freshman Killough and sophomore Stephen Gregory competed in the 1500m race. Running in the second fastest heat, Killough raced to a time of 4:52.64 which was good for 10th in her heat and 22nd overall out of 58 runners. Gregory also ran a strong race finishing tenth in his heat with a time of 4:33.01 which placed him 52nd overall in the event. The evening concluded with freshman Collin Skeen racing to a time of 16:55.27 in the 5000m event. Skeen finished 14th out of 21 in his heat and 36th overall.
On Saturday the distance trio competed in a second round of events. Killough and Gregory both raced in the 800m event. Killough posted a solid time of 2:26.04 for 27th place out 60 competitors. Gregory finished the race with a time of 2:13.59 placing him 7th out of 14 in his heat and 47th overall. Skeen wrapped up a solid weekend by finishing 6th out 16 in his heat and 16th overall with a time of 9:47.72 in the 3000m race.

The outdoor season will continue with a trip down to Johnson City on Thursday, March 27 for the Milligan Relays.
