Bulldogs Bite Cavs in Football Finale

Barbourville, KY – The Union College Bulldogs took a bite out of the University of Virginia's College at Wise Highland Cavaliers early posted a season finale football victory. Union scored the first 27 points before taking home a 47-28 win.

The Bulldogs won their third game in a row to finish 4-6 on the year and 3-2 in the Mid-South East Division. UVa-Wise wrapped up the 2005 campaign one game better than the previous three years at 4-7 and 1-4 in the division.

Trailing 33-14 late in the third quarter, Cavs' safety Donnie Avant picked off Bulldog quarterback Joey Waters pass and returned it to the home 29-yardline. UVa-Wise took nine plays to put the ball in the endzone when quarterback Randy Hippeard hit Kendon Doe from 11 yards to pull to within 33-21 with 8:02 in the game.

Union took over at its own 17-yard line. Waters hit Courtney Elesby for 36 yards down the right sideline on the first play to spur an 83-yard, seven-play scoring drive. Dominic Yuille ran into the endzone six plays later from eight yards to take away any possible comeback hopes for the Cavs to go ahead 40-21 with 5:50.

Hippeard was able to find Doe on a tipped pass in the left side of the endzone on the next possession to make it 40-28 with 1:21 remaining. The UVa-Wise onsides kick was fielded by Ernest Johnson who returned it to the visitor 16-yard line. The Bulldogs pused across a final score with 36 seconds for the 47-28 final.

The big bright spot of the UVa-Wise day was running back Ra'Shad Morgan. The junior ran for 139 yards on 12 carries for an 11.6-yard per carry average. He had scampers of 44 and 56 yards. Hakeem Abdul-Saboor rushed for 57 yards and a one-yard touchdown while catching five balls for 89 yards. In his final game, Godfrey Pestana ran a score in from 12 yards out.

Linebacker Brandon Moore led the Cavs' defense with nine tackles and a pass breakup. Avant posted six stops and picked off one interception while Jon Nacy had two tackles for loss and a sack of 14 yards.
