Georgetown Rolls Over UVa-Wise Football

Wise, Va. – Georgetown College found the endzone on its first three possessions and rolled over host University of Virginia’s College at Wise Saturday evening. The 12 th-ranked Tigers led 36-0 before taking away a 51-6 rout to open the NAIA Mid-South Eastern Division slate.
Georgetown won its third straight contest to improve to 4-2 on the football season and 1-0 in the Mid-South East Division. UVa-Wise dropped its fourth contest in a row to fall to 3-4 and 0-1 in the division.
The Tigers marched 40 yards for its first score on the opening drive of the game and never trailed. Jeff Smith hit David Penland from 37 yards on fourth-and-seven to open the scoring. Georgetown took advantage of a UVa-Wise interception to score on its second possession with Smith hitting Kyle Zaharias from seven yards. The visitors totaled 19 first quarter points and added 10 more tallies in the second quarter for a 29-0 score at the half.
Smith threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game in the Tigers’ first time with the ball in the second half when he found C.R. Rohrbough for a 77-yard score to make it 36-0 four minutes into the third quarter.
The Highland Cavaliers put together it best drive of late in the third quarter. Freshman quarterback Scott McMahon plunged into the endzone from a yard out for the UVa-Wise lone score of the night to make it 36-6 at 3:02 in the third. Georgetown added two more touchdowns and a safety for the 51-6 final.
Georgetown outgained UVa-Wise 539 to 217 yards. Smith passed for 345 yards on 20 of 31 passes and five touchdowns. Chris Sharrock caught five balls for 76 yards and rushed seven times for 49 yards and a rushing touchdown. Rohrbough three passes for 93 yards and a score. Kenya Williams totaled eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
McMahon threw for 115 yards on 12 of 23 attempts to go with his scoring one-yard run. Kendon Doe caught four passes for 21 yards. Safety Deandre Lewis posted 13 stops and Donne Avant picked off one pass, had two breakups and five tackles.
UVa-Wise will next return to action on Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. game at Shorter College in Rome, GA. Union College will visit Georgetown College next Saturday.
