Wheeler and Damm Garner Mid-South Football Players of the Week

Wise, VA -- University of Virginia’s College at Wise linebacker Corey Wheeler and punter/kicker Ray Damm garnered Mid-South football Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week released on Monday afternoon. The duo were key parts of the Highland Cavaliers’ victory, 29-27, at Shorter College last Thursday night.
The pair helped UVa-Wise even its mark to 4-4 on the 2005 campaign and 1-1 in the Mid-South East Division ranks.
Wheeler stopped two big first half Shorter drives. He intercepted a Shorter pass midway through the second quarter which the Cavs turned into a field goal on the ensuing possession. The Manassas, VA product picked off his second pass in as many Shorter possessions in the UVa-Wise endzone to preserve a 15-7 halftime lead. He added nine tackles and a tackle for loss on the evening.
Damm had his best outing of the 2005 season. The sophomore from Fredericksburg, VA made both of his two point after attempts and connected on the lone field goal try covering 26 yards. Damm also had a solid night punting with a 43.5 yard per punt average, booted a 57-yarder and dropped one of his four punts inside the opponents’ 20-yardline.
The Highland Cavaliers return to action at home on Saturday afternoon starting at 5:00 p.m. against the NAIA’s fifth-ranked team, the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).
