Hippeard Sets Cavs Records in Going Away Win over Bears

October 21, 2006
Game Stats

Pikeville, KY -- Randy Hippeard passed his way into the UVA-Wise record books Saturday night to take a going away road victory at Pikeville College. Hippeard threw for 439 yards and five touchdowns as the Highland Cavaliers built a 29-point lead before winning 52-38 over the Bears.

With the victory, UVA-Wise sealed its first winning campaign since 2001 and first under head coach Bruce Wasem. The Cavs improved to 6-2 on the year with three games left in the regular season and 1-1 in the Mid-South East. The win over Pikeville College (2-5/0-2 Mid-South East) ended a three-game losing streak in the series.

Hippeard was the general of the high-octane UVA-Wise offense once again. The unit outgained its eighth-straight opponent 543 to 377 yards of total offense. The sophomore from Stafford, VA completed 30 of 42 attempts for a school-record 439 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. He hit four different receivers for scores and broke the UVA-Wise single season mard for passing touchdowns with 21 breaking David Nara's 19 from 1994.

The quarterback had two receivers go over 100 yards on the night. Freshman Aric Evans (Cincinnait, OH/Taft) grabbed eight balls for 152 yards, a 10-yard score and a 60-yard pass to highlight the night. Sophomore Kendon Doe (Reidsville, NC) joined Evans with seven catches of his own for 121 yards and a 30-yard touchdown. Freshman Matt Barbour (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) had the most receptions with nine covering 79 yards and a 17-yard score. Senior Herb Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) hauled in three passes for 47 yards with scoring catches of 17 and 28 yards. Running back Ra'Shad Morgan (Chesterfield, VA/Meadowbrook) surpassed 100-yards rushing for the seventh time in eight games with 117 yards on 25 attempts and two touchdowns.

Three Cavs' defenders, Andrew Hutchings (Midlothian/Clover Hill), Jon Nacy (Chesterfield/Manchester) and Ben Robertson (Morehead City, NC) recorded five tackles apiece. Hutchings had a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recover. Nacy batted two passes down at the line while Robertson had two tackles for loss, a sack, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Reggie Dorsainvil (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) and Henry Potter (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) had a tackle for loss apiece and Brandon Thompson (Floyd, VA/Floyd County) picked off one pass.

After stopping Pikeville on the game's opening possession, UVA-Wise drove 90 yards on 13 plays for the first points of the night. Set up by a Morgan 24-yard run, Hippeard found Barbour from 17 yards six plays later to make it 7-0 and the Cavs would never trail.

The Bears put a field goal on the board from 38 yards by Kyle Chilton in the opening minutes of the second quarter after a Cavs' muff of a punt. UVA-Wise responded with touchdowns on two-straight drives in the middle of the frame. The first came after Robertson sacked, forced a fumble and recovered it on the Pikeville quarterback. Morgan scampered through the Bear defense from 27 yards before Hippeard hit Watson from 17 yards to open a 21-3 score. The Bears scored their first touchdown with 48 seconds in the first half only to see the Cavs drive 61 yards in 43 seconds before Ray Damm booted a 36-yard field goal for a 24-10 halftime advantage.

UVA-Wise took the opening drive of the second half 63 yards on only six plays capped by Hippeard hitting Watson for a second time in the game with this one from 28 yards for a 31-10 tally.

The score was 38-23 when UVA-Wise pulled away by four scores. Hippeard found Doe from 30 yards for the first touchdown before Andrew Hutchings recovered a Pikeville fumble on the home 20-yard line. The Cavs turned it into another touchdown three plays later on a two-yard Morgan plunge to make it 52-23. The Bears added two late scores against the Cavs backups for the 52-38 final score.

UVA-Wise will return to Carl Smith Stadium next Saturday, October 28th for a 1:30 p.m. kick-off.
