Efficient Offense Propels Cavs Past Knights

Wise, VA -- The Highland Cavalier offense amassed 581 yards of total offense and scored touchdowns on their first six possessions to blow past the Knights Saturday evening. The University of Virginia's College at Wise outscored Southern Virginia University 22-0 in the second half to run away with a 49-13 victory.
UVA-Wise improved to 3-0 for the second-straight season. The Cavs have now outscored their three opponents 47-0 in the third quarter of the opening three games. Southern Virginia drops to 0-4 on the year.
Cavs' quarterback Randy Hippeard (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) produced another efficient evening. He led drives of 78, 74, 75 and 64 for scores of the UVA-Wise first half possessions and 51 and 67-yard drives of the second half. Hippeard completed 15 of 20 passes for 305 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Kendon Doe caught four passes for 109 yards and a six-yard score. Freshmen Matt Barbour (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) grabbed four balls for 79 yards and Aric Evans pulled in three passes for 50 yards with a 29-yard touchdown. Running back Ra'Shad Morgan (Chesterfield, VA/Meadowbrook) was well under his season average but scored five times on 86 yards. Freshman back Chris Laws (Newport News, VA/Warwick)carried seven times for 92 yards.
On defense, UVA-Wise allowed 202 yards while holding Southern Virginia to -10 yards on the ground in 24 attempts. Corey Wheeler (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) was the top tackler with nine stops, a tackle for loss and a breakup. Reggie Dorsainvil (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) provided two sacks, three tackles for loss and six tackles. Freshman Andrew Hutchings (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) added two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and three stops. Linebacker Chas Johnson (Newport News, VA/Warwick) tallied eight stops and a tackle for loss.
The story of the game was the Cavs' offense scoring on all four first half possessions and the first two of the second half. The UVA-Wise defense posted another third quarter shutout where the home team outscored the Knights 13-0 and then added nine more unanswered tallies in the fourth quarter. UVA-Wise did not attempt a punt on the night.
Southern Virginia did total 282 yards on kick-off returns while only having 202 yards of total offense.
UVA-Wise will continue its three-game homestand with a 1:30 p.m. tilt against Cumberland (TN) University for Homecoming next Saturday, September 23rd.
