December 12, 2007

Wise, Va. – Quarterback Randy Hippeard and six other UVa-Wise players received 2007 Virginia College Division Football All-State honors conducted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).

Hippeard was the lone Highland Cavalier to repeat as an all-state first team selection.  His senior team mates offensive lineman Henry Potter and linebacker Ben Robertson joined him on the first team.  NAIA All-American first team running back Ra’Shad Morgan, wide receiver Jason Lovett, defensive end Reggie Dorsainvil and safety James Haley were all-state second team picks.

The Cavs earned its first Mid-South East Division title, finished 14 th in the regular season rankings and posted the program’s best year since 1996 at 9-2.

Hippeard (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) made the all-state first team for a second year in a row.  The junior signal-caller completed 226 of 359 pass attempts for 3,455 yards (63.0%) with 37 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.  He rated second in the NAIA for both pass efficiency (172.79), passing touchdowns and total offense (319.2 yards/game).

Potter (Va. Beach, Va./Salem) went from the all-state second team last year to the top team in 2007.  He was the anchor of the offensive line at left tackle.  Potter helped the Cavs lead the NAIA in scoring offense (49.5 points/game) and second in total offense (515.5 yds/gm).

Robertson (Morehead City, N.C./West Carteret) like Potter went from the second to all-state first team.  The middle linebacker led the UVa-Wise defense in tackles for the third year in a row after recording 124 in 11 games.  He was eighth in the nation in tackles (11.3/game) while having 12.5 tackles for loss and six sacks as well as returning one interception for a score.

For the second-straight year, Morgan (Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) was named AFCA NAIA All-American first team running back but fell from the Virginia All-State first team to the second squad.  The senior led the NAIA in scoring (17.4 ppg), second in rushing (148.5 yds/gm) and fourth in all-purpose (178.1 yds/gm).  Morgan ran for 1,485 yards on 253 attempts and a school record 27 touchdowns.  He also caught 34 passes for 296 yards and two scores for a new program best 29 touchdowns on the season.

Lovett (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) set three season UVa-Wise receiving records on his way to the all-state second team.  The wide out pulled in 74 balls for 1,058 yards and 17 touchdowns, all new program season marks.  He also tied a single game record with 13 catches against Pikeville College.  The sophomore scored 108 points on the year and was third in the nation in receiving touchdowns and ninth in scoring (9.8 ppg).

Dorsainvil (Va. Beach, Va./Salem) made his second appearance on the all-state second team.  The senior led the Cavs with 17 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks while second in tackles (79).

Haley (Gladys, Va./Wm. Campbell) earned his first all-state honors.  The strong safety had the most solo tackles on the squad with 45 while third in total tackles (74).  The sophomore returned one fumble for a 68-yard touchdown and blocked a punt in the season finale at West Virginia Tech and returned it 13 yards for another touchdown.
