Cavs Lovett and Johnson Sweep Mid-South Weekly Awards

Louisville, Ky. – After having a strong performance on last Thursday night, the UVa-Wise football team swept the Mid-South Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards. The NAIA’s 14 th-ranked Highland Cavaliers received a career-game from wide receiver Jason Lovett and an outstanding first collegiate game in linebacker Amondre Johnson in a 56-12 victory over Kentucky Christian.

The junior wide out from Fredericksburg, Va. set all three UVa-Wise receiving records last year of 74 receptions covering 1,058 yards and 17 touchdowns. Lovett connected with Cavs All-American quarterback Randy Hippeard on five first half touchdowns to help the team go out to a 35-0 halftime score. The speedy target grabbed a total of nine passes for 232 yards, just shy of the program’s 239 yard single game record set by Anthony Richards in 1994 against Emory & Henry, and set his fourth school record with the five touchdown receptions.

On the defense, Johnson (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) saw his first college game action. He was part of a defense to allow just 54 yards of offense in the first half by host Kentucky Christian. The outside linebacker went on to lead the Cavs’ unit with seven tackles, five solo, a nine-yard sack and recovered a fumble.

UVa-Wise has this week off to before traveling across the state of Virginia to many of the team’s home area against Newport News Apprentice starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 th.
