Cavs Improve MSC Mark with Win over CU
September 11, 2004
LEBANON, TN - UVa-Wise senior Dieontea Stewart threw a touchdown pass and later was on the receiving end of another as UVa-Wise toppled Mid-South Conference foe Cumberland University 30-6 Saturday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium in Lebanon, Tenn.
The win improved the Highland Cavaliers overall and conference records to 2-1, marking the first time the team from Wise has sported an above .500 MSC record since joining the conference in 2002.
Junior Larry Smith led all rushers with 82 yards on just 12 carries. He and freshman Devon Carson each scored touchdowns on the ground for the Cavaliers.
Quarterback Josh Mabe hit on nine of 23 passes for a season-high 232 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore's lone scoring pass came via a 39-yard strike to Stewart as time expired in the first half, giving the Cavs a 21-0 halftime lead.
Cumberland U. (0-2 overall and 0-2 in the MSC) got its only score of the game near the end of the third quarter on a six-yard run by Marquis Cox.
The Cavaliers, however, quickly turned that negative into a positive by blocking the extra-point attempt. UVa-Wise's William Brooks scooped up the pigskin and scampered into the end zone for an extra two points, giving the Cavs a 23-6 advantage.
The Cavs' defense played its best game of the season thus far, limiting the Bulldogs to just 81 yards on the ground and 153 in the air.
UVa-Wise sacked Cumberland U., quarterback Jonathan Snyder three times. Haynes Morris and Matt Hutchings picked up a sack each and Cory Wheeler, who led the Cavs with a nine tackles, and Brian Atkins combined on the other.
UVa-Wise steps out of MSC play Saturday when it visits Mars Hill (N.C.) College, an NCAA Division II school and a member of the South Atlantic Conference.
The Lions are 2-0 on the season after winning Saturday 63-12 over St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C. Last season Mars Hill defeated the Cavaliers 37-14 in the first ever night game played at Carl Smith Stadium.
