October 16, 2004
GEORGETOWN, KY - Third-ranked Georgetown College rolled to 56-14 Mid-South Conference victory over UVa-Wise last Saturday at Rawlings Stadium in Georgetown, Ky.
The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the MSC.
The Tigers, meanwhile, improved to 7-0 overall and in league play.
Junior running back Larry Smith became the first Cavalier to rush for more than 100 yards in a game this season, gaining 131 yards on 28 carries.
Smith earned his yards against a Tigers defense that had held its previous six opponents to an average of 10 rushing yards per contest.
Cavs' quarterback Josh Mabe completed five of 16 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown pass. Mabe, a sophomore, also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a Tigers' touchdown.
Senior Dieontea Stewart caught four passes for 57 yards and a score.
Receiver James Poitier hauled in three passes for 24 yards. The senior also returned a kickoff for 26 yards.
The Cavaliers' rushing attack racked up 192 yards to the Tigers' 191. The difference, however, was in the two teams' passing attacks. Georgetown, ranked No. 3 in the nation, put the ball in the air 40 times, completing 28 of those attempts for 355 yards and two touchdowns.
Josh Hamm led the UVa-Wise defense with 12 tackles, and Maurice Hughes recorded two sacks in trying to slow the high-powered Georgetown offense.
Cornerback Tim Smith forced a fumble that stopped a Tigers drive on the Cavs' one yard line. Smith also intercepted a Georgetown pass later in the game.
