Cavs Tame Tigers, Upset No. 23 Campbellsville 52-45
October 30, 2004
CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Junior running back Larry Smith ran for a career-high 227 yards and two touchdowns as the Cavaliers pulled off a pre-Halloween shocker, a 52-45 upset on the road Saturday over No. 23 Campbellsville (Ky.) University.
The Highland Cavaliers, now 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-South Conference, ended a frustrating five-game losing streak with the win over the Tigers.
Before Saturday, UVa-Wise had never beaten Campbellsville in the all-time series. The loss for Campbellsville drops the Tigers, who going into the game were tied for third place in the MSC standings, to 5-3 in the conference and 6-3 overall.
Cavs' Sophomore quarterback Josh Mabe had one of his most productive passing days of the season Saturday against Campbellsville, completing 13 of 25 passes for 251 yards.
Mabe hooked up with senior receiver James Poitier three times in the game, once for a 68-yard gain.
Poitier's three grabs netted him an even 100 receiving yards for the game, marking the first time all season a UVa-Wise receiver has recorded 100-yards.
The UVa-Wise offense had, by far, its most productive outing of the season, rolling to 599 total yards against the tenacious Tigers' defense. Most of that production came via the running game as the Cavs galloped to 348 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
In addition to Smith's two scores came a couple of TD runs from Blake Owens and one each by Mabe and freshman Devon Carson.
Defensively, senior Josh Hamm led UVa-Wise with 16 tackles, while Brandon Moore, Ben Robertson and Corey Wheeler each recorded double figures tackles totals.
