FOOTBALL
Cavs' Smith listed among NAIA's brightest
January 17 , 2004
WISE, Va. – Often the word cerebral is applied to those athletes who fully understand the complexities of the games they play.
They are the quintessential student-athletes who know the ins and outs of the playbook and the textbooks. One such player has been a dominant force at UVa-Wise over the past four years, achieving excellence on both the football field and in the classroom.
Tim Smith, who in the fall completed his senior season for the Highland Cavaliers, embodies the personification of the pure student-athlete.
On Thursday, Smith, an art major at UVa-Wise, received recognition for his accomplishments when the NAIA listed the Marion native among its 2004 Daktronics-NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athletes team.
To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must be a junior or above in academic standing with a cumulative 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
On the field this past season, Smith intercepted two passes, broke up four more and made 56 tackles as a defensive back.
A list of the complete scholar athletes team can be found online at www.naia.org.
