Cavs Golfers Move up to Seventh while Bulldogs Run Away with Invite Title

Kingsport, Tenn. – Bryan Bentley and John Blake Graham had strong second days with rounds of 73 and 74 to help UVa-Wise move up to a place to seventh in the final Cavalier Invitational standings. Tennessee Wesleyan ran away with the event as it claimed the top spot by 13 strokes.

After playing behind Bluefield on the first day, UVa-Wise moved in front by 14 strokes into seventh (620) with its strong 305 team score, the fifth best team tally of the day. The host was just two strokes behind Union College (618) for sixth. Tennessee Wesleyan ran away with the event by posting a 579 total, 13 shots better than Spartanburg Methodist CC’s 592. King College was third (305) and followed by Milligan (306) and Covenant (307).

Spartanburg Methodist’s Matt Jackson and Tennessee Wesleyan’s Casey Fleniken tied for top individual honors with a tally of 142.

Bentley improved by five shots from the first day to a 73 to tie for 14 th for a 151. Rhyne Hammitt had a quality two day effort for an identical 151. Graham decreased his score by seven strokes to 74 for a tournament total of 155. Evan Sturgill and Matt Faircloth finished with totals of 163 and 173. Individually, Jacob Ritchie wrapped up the two day event with a 195.

UVa-Wise will wrap up its 2008 spring docket at the Appalachian Athletic Conference/NAIA Region XII Tournament on April 14 and 15 in London, Ky.
